Why Can't People Just Leave Islam?

There has been alot of reporting on the fact that the Hadith says that, "If anyone leaves Islam, kill him" (paraphrased).

And it does say exactly that! But what I have not seen from anyone is the reason why this verse is in the hadith to begin with. Maybe someone somewhere has commented on this and I missed it, but I am gonna do it here just to get it off my chest.

First off, I would like anyone, anywhere to please show me any current religion that makes this same statement... (pauses, and hears crickets chirping). I don't need to pause too long because I know for a fact that there is not a single one save for Islam.

Why is it that no other religion makes this kind of threat? Perhaps they are not afraid that everyone will leave? Hmmm. What does that say about Islam? Could it be that in the beginning of Islam, before this hadith was penned, that people were deserting Islam like rats off a sinking ship?

And what would be the reason for that desertion? One needs only to read the Qur'an to figure that out. The violence that has permeated Islam for the last 1400+ years scares people away. It would scare many people away unless they are totally brainwashed, (which is the case of the more extreme types), or they fear what may happen to them or their families, which is why they won't get rid of this one hadith.

Many muslims live under "compulsion" to remain Islamic not because of belief, but under fear. They will tell you that they "believe in Allah and that Mohammad is their prophet". But who wouldn't say that when you live under constant paranoia that admitting the truth might mean having your head mounted on a stick.

I do believe that IF islamic scholars were to delete the "death" hadith and tell all muslims that they are free to leave Islam if they so wish and that there would be no penalty that there would be a mass exodus. It would start slow of course as the most brave of "moderates" tested the water. But given time and there were no deaths, you would have a mass exodus that would cause Islam to be moved into a minor religion catagory along side Rostafarianism, Santaria, or The Church of the Most high Priestess.

I would estimate that Islam would lose 80 - 90% of their followers within 20 years. And the rest would probably be belittled, tarred, feathered and run off by those that had already left. I suspect that some of the hangers-on might even be killed by those they tormented for years. I also think that the women would have somethings to say as well. How did Mr. T say say it? Pity da fool that kept a muslim woman under subjection to Sharia law!

Let's face it Muslims, this hadith remains on the books because your "control freaks". Without it you wouldn't have any followers. Go ahead and deny it but I am gonna call your bluff. Rescind that hadith, get rid of it and show you mean it by putting to death anyone that tries to enforce it. Show us that you are willing to let your religion stand on it's own without threats. As we say in the U.S., "PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS"!

Christianity nor Judaism has this kind of threat in their religions and look, they are the two greatest religions in the world. Yes, there are those that do leave the religions, but yet both religions flourish and have done so for thousands of years! Wouldn't you love to be considered to be the third great religion? (Yes I know you think you already are but you aren't really until you take this major step). Show us your not afraid, show us that Islam truely is a "religion of peace".

Until you do, you will always be known as the "religion that hangs the sword of capital punishment over the throat of every Muslim".

On another note, please don't write me and try to tell me that this hadith is not enforced. I have news articles from all over the Islamic world that proves that it is quite common. Please know that I am well aware of the concept of "al-Taquiyya", (lying for Islam). And please don't tell me that you never heard of this concept because in doing so, you prove it's exsistence, Click here if you still wish to profess ignorance.

I'll be waiting to see if you accept my challenge, but I know you won't...
