http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/12829.htm> - Updated 05/07/08 18:11 Israel time - Never has there been an Israeli prime minister as disrespected and unpopular as Ehud Olmert. Never has there been a situation whether the government operates without a perception of legitimacy or direction sanctioned by the nation's citizens. So it comes as a relief and even a harbinger of joy that the nation's sixtieth birthday seems destined to be marked by the impending ouster of Olmert from office….

Disaster Preparedness Drill Kicks Off At Depot <
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/901/story/176400.html> Emergency sirens sounded just after 9 a.m. after a mock fire and explosion at the Umatilla Chemical Depot sent a plume of toxic smoke toward Benton County. Residents around the depot were evacuated, along with Benton County residents north of the Columbia River in the Paterson and Plymouth areas. Evacuation shelters were opened in Kennewick and Prosser. About 30 minutes after the disaster drill, Benton County's Emergency Operations Center in Richland activated to coordinate evacuation plans and set up decontamination shelters so officials would be prepared for whatever happened next. Monday's emergency drill was the first scenario for emergency responders to deal with during a three-day disaster preparedness drill. Benton, Umatilla and Morrow county officials, along with officials from both states, are participating in the annual Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program drill. The local drill is being done as part of a national training exercise coordinating local, state and federal agencies….
No DNA Shall Go Unowned By Big Brother <
http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cont/node/6676> Signed into law April 24, 2008, the oh-so innocent sounding Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007 establishes a national database of newborn DNA. This law establishes collection and warehousing of newborn DNA for scientific research and requires no parental consent or knowledge. As reported by Minnesota state health department, 42,210 of the 780,000 children whose DNA have been taken have been subjected to genetic research….
Bush Signs DNA Database Into Law: Plan Will Go Into Action During Next Emergency, Could Identify Some Individuals As 'Less Useful To Society' <
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=63112> With virtually no fanfare, President Bush signed into law a plan ordering the government to take no more than six months to set up a "national contingency plan" to screen newborns' DNA in case of a "public health emergency." According to congressional records, S.1858, sponsored by Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., was approved in the Senate Dec. 13, in the House April 8 and signed by Bush April 24. "Soon, under this bill, the DNA of all citizens will be housed in government genomic biobanks and considered governmental property for government research," said Twila Brase, president of the Citizens' Council on Health Care. "The DNA taken at birth from every citizen is essentially owned by the government, and every citizen becomes a potential subject of government-sponsored genetic research... Genetic testing could be used for purposes found immoral in the Hippocratic medical tradition. For example, a utilitarian use of testing, in this example also immoral, would be to test for conditions which would make an individual less useful to society for the purpose of killing that person, as has been done in some totalitarian systems, such as Nazi Germany..."
New Disaster Preparedness Strategy Determines Who Lives... And Who Dies: Be Ready To Care Of Your Own <
http://www.raidersnewsnetwork.com/full.php?news=15248> In an unprecedented initiative, US and Canadian experts have developed a comprehensive framework to optimize and manage critical care resources during times of mass critical care disasters. The new proposal suggests legally protecting clinicians who follow accepted protocols for the allocation of scarce resources when providing care during mass critical care events. The framework represents a major step forward to uniformly deliver sufficient critical care during catastrophes and maximize the number of victims who have access to potential life-saving interventions. "If a mass casualty critical care event occurred tomorrow, many people with clinical conditions that are survivable under usual health-care system circumstances may have to forgo life-sustaining interventions due to deficiencies in supply, staffing, or space." As a result, the Task Force for Mass Critical Care developed an emergency mass critical care (EMCC) framework for hospitals and public health authorities aimed to maximize effective critical care surge capacity," said Asha Devereaux, MD, FCCP, Task Force for Mass Critical Care….
In An Emergency: Who Should Live And Who Should Die? <
http://www.wesleyjsmith.com/blog/labels/Triage.%20%20Pandemic%20Planning.html> Triage is designed to prioritize care when there is an acute shortage of resources. It creates a temporary priority line for treatment based on helping the most severely injured or ill who, with proper care, are likely to survive. Triage is definitely not rationing since the ultimate goal is to treat everyone. It strikes me that the recommendation slips from the former into the latter. After all, who knows what...
