I thought it would be difficult to turn the tv off in my home. My children were around 2.5 and 1 year old. I was concerned about how much of their day they were missing by watching tv. It was actually easier to have no tv than to have some tv. There were no more questions about whether they could put it on, it was no longer an issue. Within 2 weeks they just stopped asking, the children learnt to enter the house and find something to do. Somehow the atmosphere of the house began to calm. It is actually more peaceful without tv. I don't have to fight the box for my children's attention, and they don't have to fight it for mine. They do a lot of drawing, making and playing together, sometimes they just read, they love listening to story tapes while they colour. They are 5 and 6 years old now. They watch tv one night a week from around 4-6pm, it keeps them in touch with other kids culture. They are not precocious kids, they are just children that don't need tv. I'm very proud of them, but I guess that's obvious.
i do have another friend who turned off the tv around the same time in her children's lives. Are there many of us? Have you tried it? Do you feel your family has benefitted, and how? |
